"Afterimages"
Ako Dantsu is a hand-woven carpet that has been made by the seaside of Ako since the end of the Edo period. While weaving new works, I am also involved in the restoration of old dantsu. Now, in order to grasp what and how to make it from now on, I touch the remaining works and search for afterimages of the people and places surrounding the former dantsu from the few clues. Please take a look at both old works from 100 years ago and new works that look ahead 100 years from now.

Old and new Ako Dantsu

Thanks to the kindness of Mr. Kenichiro Kitajima, we have received permission to screen the film. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again.

Kenichiro Kitajima "Dantsu" (produced in 1972, 14 minutes)
In 1972, we will screen a short film about the only remaining dandouba in Ako Misaki. During the period of high economic growth, the dantsu industry declined, and only a few weavers were operating on a small scale. Mr. Kitajima, who was working in Ako at the time, felt the need to record this disappearing tradition in the form of a video, so he turned an 8mm camera and produced it. This is the only valuable video that shows the state of the old carpet and the techniques of the weavers.
